Nets Put Big Push Behind Recaps to Lure Viewers (AdWeek.com via Yahoo! News)NEW YORK TV networks are increasingly using catch-up programming, otherwise known as recap episodes, as a strategy to lure new viewers who may have missed out on a show the first time around. They are even crafting marketing efforts around the recap programming that goes well beyond slapped-together clip shows.

Marc Lampkin: NEA: Don’t Squelch the Debate! (HuffingtonPost)Perhaps the NEA is really just saying candidates are united in their opposition to performance pay if it is based on student test scores. But that still wouldn’t track with what I saw on Sunday’s debate.

Resolved Question: Do you think Hillary Clinton is behind this mysterious website aimed at getting tips against rivals?Unauthorized ‘Hillaryis44′ Website Hits ObamaJune 25, 2007 4:33 PMABC News’ Jake Tapper Reports: A mysterious website has emerged disseminating pro-Clinton and anti-anyone-who-isn’t-Hillary propaganda.”We are not affiliated with the Hillary For President Exploratory Committee, or any official Hillary Clinton organization in any way,” says the pro-Clinton website “Hillaryis44.com,” the creators of which are anonymous and elusive. Conservative commentator Peggy Noonan says the website “reads like The Warrior’s Id … In tone the site is very Tokyo Rose. Encouraging readers to send in ‘confidential tips,’ its primary target and obvious obsession is Barack Obama.” Various passages say: “Senator Barack Obama (D-Rezko) is busy lately lying about President Bill Clinton” and “attacking entire communities.” Another passage reads: “We have written extensively on Obama, and his indicted slumlord friend Antoin ‘Tony’ Rezko. We have repeatedly warned David Axelrod, Michelle Michelle Obama and Barack Obama that this story is not going away.” According to the website, the Obama campaign is “still posing as innocents incapable of doing anything unsavory even as evidence mounts that unsavory is their favorite dish.”
I am so confused. Is the Apprentice an Affiliate of NBC? Is The Amazing Race and the Price is Right Affiliates of CBS? I know that affiliates to networks include local tv stations like our local news stations using networks like ABC,CBS, and NBC. What else are affiliates of networks? My textbook is retarded!thank you
Resolved Question: What are tv network affiliates?
ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN and spew the same stuff from the same point of view…and they bash america on their affiliates outside of america. Fox has the same things shown in america as what they show outside of america…i have been living overseas for about 4 years now…and was shocked the first time i went back to visit my family and see how different the news was in america than that outside america…Fox is the only one with about the same inside as it was outside…Resolved Question: If liberals truly for diversity, why do they hate Fox News so much?
Resolved Question: Stats Problem? For many years TV executives used the guideline that 30 percent of the audiences were watching each of the prime-time networks and 10 percent were watching cable stations on a weekday night. A random sample of 500 viewers in the Tampa?St. Petersburg, Florida area last Monday night showed that 165 homes were tuned in to the ABC affiliate, 140 to the CBS affiliate, 125 to the NBC affiliate, and the remainder were viewing a cable station. At the .05 significance level, can we conclude that the guideline is still reasonable?
I know that local news stations probably use a police scanner, when news of a police/fire/emergency type of matter comes up. How about other news? How about the funny news out there, or the peculiar news? Do some news networks copy the news from other networks, who break the story first? Like I saw on ABC News a few weeks ago the story of the girl in Florida who kept hiccuping over and over. Now, ABC News just released a story of another girl who can’t stop sneezing. Well, today, a local CBS affiliate talked about both the girl who was constantly hiccuping, and the girl who was constantly sneezing. Could the internet be the source of such off-the-wall news, and the news networks, whether local or international, get the news from there? Is it safe to assume that the big three (NBC, ABC, CBS) all show pretty much the same news, alongside FOX and CNN?Resolved Question: how do news networks get their news information?
Sources tell ABC News that the plot may have involved moving between 10 and 20 suspects believed to be affiliated with al Qaeda in Iraq into the United States with student visas ? the same method used by the 19 al Qaeda terrorists who struck American targets on Sept. 11. http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2813235&page=1Thank God that President Bush is protecting us by finding this kind of plot in Iraq instead of waiting like liberals want to, for the bombs to hit here.Resolved Question: al Qaeda plot based in Iraq discovered, that explains why liberals want America to leave Iraq, doesn’t it?

Resolved Question: Why do some of the US citizens on Y! Answers…..?….not realise that Y!A is not solely used by people in the U.S. and that there is a world outside their own country???I’m not one for ranting but it’s time I got on my soap box for a few minutes to vent my frustrations. A couple of examples from the past few days;Someone asked, “Who will be watching C4 at 10pm”, obviously referring to the Tourette’s programme with Keith Allan. Someone from the US answers, “Don’t you get that Channel 4 is different in every place. Where I live now it is PBS, when I lived in Utah it was the ABC Affiliate.”!!!!Another asked about where can they could buy an exercise bike in the Motherwell areas, someone from the US answers “Sears”!! Yeah, like we have Sears stores in the UK let alone Motherwell!!Dont think I am bashing all Americans here. I’m not. It’s a minority but a minority in US terms, considering the size of your country, is a lot of people. Is it because we Brits live in a small island by comparison that we are more educated in…other countries. I mean, a large percentage of US citizens don’t even own a passport or have travelled outside their own state. We are certainly not as insular as that.It is also apparent from spelling, grammar, even the type of question that most of us UK ‘answerers’ can tell when a question has come from the US? Some of you in the US aren’t able to make that distinction. Is it just me that feels this way. Thoughts anyone?I apologise my Irish friends! I missed you out. You also use this site.Munch, munch, chomp (me eating large portions of humble pie….)Mark you miss my point. I only cited these as examples. There are a lot more I could use but space is limited. A Motherwell in the US, ok but I guarantee that if there is then;1) It’s not big enought to have a Sears store2) Some of the US couldnt even point to it on a mapMy point is that this insular thinking, albeit a minority when compared to the rest of the US, must still be thousands. And my worry is that it is these people that are voting for people to run the most powerful country in the world. Doesn’t that concern you slightly? OK there are still some ‘dumbasses’ in the UK, but come on, its not comparable.DesignSTE - In fairness, I’m not tarring all US citizens with the same brush. And this similarity you refer to, that’s my point, we’re not very similar by comparison on this issue. Well done for understanding the time difference though! Some of your fellow citizens don’t quite realise we’re on the other side of the world here. And, I’m not antisemetic, so dont point the finger at me for that one…DesignSTE - that sweeping statement could be construed as a hateful slur to all inhabitants of Islamic countries. Are you making an assumption everyone feels like that? If so, you’re adding weight to my argument. That’s a very insular train of thought. My mate is a muslim and he doesn’t hate jews.dhwilson58 & sean e - a lot of good points raised. You’re right. Perception of each others cultures on both sides of the Atlantic is key to this debate. Thanks for your input.sean e - interesting point re. your perception of TV. My view is that it is your news channels who put a ’spin’ on what is going on with the world. Whilst, I don’t agree with all of Michael Moore’s arguments (I’m not that liberal), he does say that one of the most balanced news stations is the BBC. Sky, Fox news etc. will always have that Rupert Murdoch spin on things in my opinion. It’s all goes down to this ‘perception of others’ thing again
Resolved Question: Have you heard about the cancellation of OJ’S book and tv appearances?? YAAYYY?DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer 1 minute agoNEW YORK - After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said Monday that ithas canceled the O.J. Simpson book and TV special “If I Did It.”"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was anill-considered project,” said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman. “We aresorry for any pain that this has caused the families of Ron Goldman andNicole Brown Simpson.”A dozen Fox affiliates had already said they would not air the two-partsweeps month special, planned for next week before the Nov. 30 publicationof the book by ReganBooks. The publishing house is a HarperCollins imprintowned - like the Fox network - by News Corp.In both the book and show, Simpson speaks in hypothetical terms about how hewould have committed the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife Nicole and her friendGoldman.Relatives of the victims have lashed out at the now scuttled publication andbroadcast plans.”He destroyed my son and took from my family Ron’s future and life. And forthat I’ll hate him always and find him despicable,” Fred Goldman told ABClast week. The industry trade publication Broadcasting & Cable editorialized againstthe show Monday, saying “Fox should cancel this evil sweeps stunt.”One of the nation’s largest superstore chains, Borders Group Inc., said lastweek it would donate any profits on the book to charity.Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of murder in a case that became its own TVdrama. The former football star and announcer was later found liable for thedeaths in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Goldman family.Judith Regan, publisher of “If I Did It,” said she considered the book to beSimpson’s confession. The television special was to air on two of the final three nights of theNovember sweeps, when ratings are watched closely to set local advertisingrates. It has been a particularly tough fall for Fox, which has seen none ofits new shows catch on and is waiting for the January bows of “AmericanIdol” and “24.”The closest precedent for such an about-face came when CBS yanked aminiseries about Ronald Reagan from its schedule in 2003 when complaintswere raised about its accuracy. The Reagan series was seen on its sisterpremium-cable channel, Showtime, instead. One station manager who had said he wasn’t airing the special said he wasconcerned that whether or not Simpson was guilty, he’d still be profitingfrom murders.”I have my own moral compass and this was easy,” said Bill Lamb, generalmanager of WDRB in Louisville. For the publishing industry, the cancellation of “If I Did It” was anastonishing end to a story like no other. Numerous books have been withdrawnover the years because of possible plagiarism, most recently KaavyaViswanathan’s “How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life,” but abook’s removal simply for objectionable content is virtually unheard of.Sales had been strong, but not sensational. “If I Did It” cracked the top 20of Amazon.com last weekend, but by Monday afternoon, at the time itscancellation had been announced, the book had fallen to No. 51.
Resolved Question: Where can I get demographics for a time slot from 8-9pm on Thursdays for network television?THE PROJECT: “THE OPPORTUNITY”You are a member of a team that is competing for the opportunity to program NBC-TV from 8-9 pm on Thursday evenings for the 2006-2007 season. Your task is to come up with your own ORIGINAL program(s) for the time block based upon your research of the audience and the competition. You can assume that the competition (ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.) will program what is currently on. As the attached sheet shows, you must cover more than just the program concept. The financial aspect is important as well.ORAL REPORTS (15 minutes) AND WRITTEN REPORTS DUE MONDAY 11/13 THE OPPORTUNITYI. PROGRAM CONCEPTWhat is the idea? What is it like? Why is it different? Why will it work? You have an hour to fill. This could obviously be done by two half hour shows or a single one hour show. Which will you do? Why? Be as specific as possible when it comes to your program(s). What about casting? Include at least three show titles and brief story lines for your program(s). Have one of them be your sweeps show. II. RESEARCH RATIONALEWhat are the demographics available in the hour? Do they change? What part of the audience is “taken” or available? How will your program slant in terms of demos? Why will it work? Will it bring back audience to the time period? III. PUBLIC RELATIONSHow will you get the attention of the consumer press TV editors? Will your people do selective touring on local TV shows? Any plans for satellite interviews? Are there any expected problems in the format with pressure groups? Are your stars promotable? Amenable?IV. STATION CLEARANCENetworks are dependent on local stations to carry their shows to viewers. What arguments will you suggest to have the affiliate carry this show rather than syndicated or local products? Why will your show be better? What will you say to the station manager?V. SALESWhy will this program be of interest to advertisers? Will its demographics be good? How have similar shows done in the past? Will there be problem story lines?VI. LICENSE FEES, DEFICIT FINANCING, OTHER MARKETSHere are some estimated license fees for TV shows. Of course they may vary widely depending on productions costs.1/2 hour comedy $1,000,0001 hour magazine $2,000,0001 hour comedy $2,00,0001 hour news doc $750,0001 hour variety $2,000,0001 hour sports $1,750,000 The network’s license fee generally covers about 80% of production costs. The producer then looks for back-end financing or expectations on other revenues. The network traditionally gets two runs. How will you recoup your money? Syndication? How syndicatable is your program? Overseas? Cable? Cassettes? Entertainment specials usually run only once since they usually don’t work well in reruns. How will you try to keep down production costs? The problems of television production costs have been heavy copy in the trade press, business magazines, and consumer press. The production team must be sensitive to these issues and have answers. At the same time they must also assure the network that they will deliver a classy product, explaining why it “will all be on the screen” for the license fee. VIII. AUDIENCE PROMOTIONWhat kind of TV Guide ads, newspaper, or magazine ads do you intend to run? How will you use major sporting events that take place on the network? What about network promos? Will you use radio? Why? What will you say? What will you do during sweeps?
