Resolved Question: Birthday Music tunes?Hi all,Tomorrow is MY BIRTHDAY!!!Yes….. (eh-hem) 44 years ago I was “planted” upon the earth. Personally, I would have chosen a more hospitable planet. :-’)I am asked by a local radio station to choose ANY song for them to play in my honor.Normally, I listen to local C&W stations. Normally, my tuner is set to any ABC radio affiliate. I enjoy hearing PAUL HARVEY reports. With these bits of info, I need some song suggestions to request. I prefer songs with a true tempo that rings in my heart when I sing karaoke.I do have a few LP albums (see how old I am?) of Kenny Rogers and Alabama.I also have a CD by Allen Jackson and Kenny Chesney when I feel like singing in my yard. - So far, my neighbors have not yet complained.I appreciate any suggestions.(When asked “how many?” - I reply “Old enough to know better. but still young enough to enjoy it….”)
Resolved Question: how do news networks get their news information?I know that local news stations probably use a police scanner, when news of a police/fire/emergency type of matter comes up. How about other news? How about the funny news out there, or the peculiar news? Do some news networks copy the news from other networks, who break the story first? Like I saw on ABC News a few weeks ago the story of the girl in Florida who kept hiccuping over and over. Now, ABC News just released a story of another girl who can’t stop sneezing. Well, today, a local CBS affiliate talked about both the girl who was constantly hiccuping, and the girl who was constantly sneezing. Could the internet be the source of such off-the-wall news, and the news networks, whether local or international, get the news from there? Is it safe to assume that the big three (NBC, ABC, CBS) all show pretty much the same news, alongside FOX and CNN?
Resolved Question: Is it a STD if you catch it while playing a sport? In Neb, Minn, and SD… High school wrestlers have spread Herpes while wrestling each other. Minn has canceled all the wrestling matches this week until they can test all the kids. THIS IS NOT A JOKE! Below is a link to the local abc affiliate with the full story, this is the most discusting story ive ever heard. Thank god I don’t wrestle. Can the kids/parents sue for this? (this isn’t like getting a broken leg playing football)http://www.ksfy.com/Stories/Story.cfm?SID=9759

Resolved Question: Why doesn’t DirecTV offer ALL of the local/network HD channels in the Portland, OR metro area ?I checked out the local channel availability in various areas around the country. In some areas, all 4 of the major affiliates (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) are available in HD, but in many areas only 1 or 2 are available. In the Portland metro area, only FOX and NBC are available (not even PBS). Is this a licensing/legal issue for DirecTV ? I have a Tivo/DirecTV investment and don’t want to switch to Comcast, but I want to maximize my HD programming availability.
Resolved Question: how to power a tv at a tailgate?I have a 19 inch CRT TV that I want to use at a tailgate to watch football games on the local abc affiliate. I don’t have a satellite dish for the broadcast, just good ol rabbit ears. I want just to power the TV but I am concerned about draining the battery with a power inverter, but a gas generator seems like a bit much in cost and noise factor. Any suggestions/solutions appreciated
THE PROJECT: “THE OPPORTUNITY”You are a member of a team that is competing for the opportunity to program NBC-TV from 8-9 pm on Thursday evenings for the 2006-2007 season. Your task is to come up with your own ORIGINAL program(s) for the time block based upon your research of the audience and the competition. You can assume that the competition (ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.) will program what is currently on. As the attached sheet shows, you must cover more than just the program concept. The financial aspect is important as well.ORAL REPORTS (15 minutes) AND WRITTEN REPORTS DUE MONDAY 11/13 THE OPPORTUNITYI. PROGRAM CONCEPTWhat is the idea? What is it like? Why is it different? Why will it work? You have an hour to fill. This could obviously be done by two half hour shows or a single one hour show. Which will you do? Why? Be as specific as possible when it comes to your program(s). What about casting? Include at least three show titles and brief story lines for your program(s). Have one of them be your sweeps show. II. RESEARCH RATIONALEWhat are the demographics available in the hour? Do they change? What part of the audience is “taken” or available? How will your program slant in terms of demos? Why will it work? Will it bring back audience to the time period? III. PUBLIC RELATIONSHow will you get the attention of the consumer press TV editors? Will your people do selective touring on local TV shows? Any plans for satellite interviews? Are there any expected problems in the format with pressure groups? Are your stars promotable? Amenable?IV. STATION CLEARANCENetworks are dependent on local stations to carry their shows to viewers. What arguments will you suggest to have the affiliate carry this show rather than syndicated or local products? Why will your show be better? What will you say to the station manager?V. SALESWhy will this program be of interest to advertisers? Will its demographics be good? How have similar shows done in the past? Will there be problem story lines?VI. LICENSE FEES, DEFICIT FINANCING, OTHER MARKETSHere are some estimated license fees for TV shows. Of course they may vary widely depending on productions costs.1/2 hour comedy $1,000,0001 hour magazine $2,000,0001 hour comedy $2,00,0001 hour news doc $750,0001 hour variety $2,000,0001 hour sports $1,750,000 The network’s license fee generally covers about 80% of production costs. The producer then looks for back-end financing or expectations on other revenues. The network traditionally gets two runs. How will you recoup your money? Syndication? How syndicatable is your program? Overseas? Cable? Cassettes? Entertainment specials usually run only once since they usually don’t work well in reruns. How will you try to keep down production costs? The problems of television production costs have been heavy copy in the trade press, business magazines, and consumer press. The production team must be sensitive to these issues and have answers. At the same time they must also assure the network that they will deliver a classy product, explaining why it “will all be on the screen” for the license fee. VIII. AUDIENCE PROMOTIONWhat kind of TV Guide ads, newspaper, or magazine ads do you intend to run? How will you use major sporting events that take place on the network? What about network promos? Will you use radio? Why? What will you say? What will you do during sweeps?Resolved Question: Where can I get demographics for a time slot from 8-9pm on Thursdays for network television?
This is the documentary composed of real footage about firefighters at ground zero. It’s been on TV twice before, and was aired last night opposite the controversial ABC mini series. Christian groups protested its showing due to “much obscene language”. I heard two or three f words at low volume by firefighters. Do you think this AFA protest was organized purely because there were swears in the film? Should CBS be fined?see http://www.afa.net for other examples of this organization’s causesResolved Question: Is the CBS 9-11 special “obscene” Should CBS and affiliates be fined $325,000 per swear?
